About The Eye

The eye is one of the mostimportant organs in the human body, allowing us to see the world around us. However, like any other organ, the eye is susceptible to various diseases and conditions that can impair vision and even cause blindness. At MEDICS, we understand the importance of eye health and work tirelessly to provide high-quality eye care services to those in need.

Common Eye Problems

Some of the most common eye problems that we encounter in our work include:

  • Refractive Errors: This is a condition where the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, leading to blurred vision. The two most common types of refractive errors are short-sightedness and long-sightedness.
  • Cataract: This is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to impaired vision. Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in the world, particularly in developing countries where access to healthcare is limited.
  • Trachoma: This is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that affects the eyes and can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is particularly common in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene.
  • Glaucoma: This is a condition where the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain is damaged, leading to gradual vision loss. It is often caused by high pressure in the eye and can be treated if caught early.
  • River Blindness: This is a parasitic infection that is transmitted through the bite of blackflies. It can lead to severe itching, skin changes, and ultimately blindness if left untreated.

Short and Long Sightedness

Short-sightedness (also known as myopia) is a condition where the eye is longer than normal or the cornea is too curved, leading to difficulty seeing objects far away. Long-sightedness (also known as hyperopia) is a condition where the eye is shorter than normal or the cornea is too flat, leading to difficulty seeing objects up close. Both conditions can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

Cataract, Trachoma, Glaucoma and River Blindness

Cataract, trachoma, glaucoma, and river blindness are serious eye conditions that require prompt diagnosis and treatment. Cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment for cataracts, while trachoma can be treated with antibiotics. Glaucoma can be managed with eye drops or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. River blindness can be prevented with the use of insecticide-treated bed nets and by avoiding blackfly-infested areas.

At MEDICS, we are committed to addressing these common eye problems through our various programs and initiatives, including free cataract surgery, eye camps, and training and capacity building for local healthcare workers. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality eye care services, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location. Join us in our mission to promote eye health and prevent blindness around the world.
